Is cannabis different to other drugs?
All drugs are different, and cannabis is no exception. However, it is often seen as a more acceptable, less harmful drug in comparison to others. In many regards, this perception is correct. Cannabis is now being legalised in many countries around the world and, although it remains illegal in the UK, it is available as a prescribed medication
However, this does not mean that cannabis is without risks altogether. Anxiety, poor sleep, poor mental health and addiction are all more likely to develop in people who start using cannabis in adolescence or who suffer with poor mental health to begin with. Cannabis that contains a high level of THC (the psychoactive compound found in cannabis) is also more likely to cause these harms, which applies to almost all street cannabis on sale in the UK today as the drug has become increasingly potent over the years.
Beyond this, the merits and minuses of cannabis are hotly contested. As with any drug, though, if you no longer have control over your use, then it is very likely cannabis is causing you more harm than good. We can provide talking therapies, connect you with other people who have experienced similar problems, and there may be medications available through your doctor, such as antidepressants, that can help treat any underlying mental health condition.
