Volunteer

“Volunteering helps me remember why I don’t drink anymore. If I can help one person, I feed proud and happy for that.”

Bill, Volunteer at North Yorkshire Horizons.

At North Yorkshire Horizons, we’re always looking for volunteers

Volunteers contribute through a variety of roles within our service.

We are keen to support our volunteers to achieve their end goal. Whether that is to gain skills and experience or to prepare for paid employment, we want to make sure you enjoy your role and get the most out of working within our team. We have a strong record of volunteers going into paid roles within drug and alcohol services.

How can I get involved?

There are many ways to volunteer your time. We have a range of roles to suit each individual. Take a look at some of the roles we have available.

Telephone Recovery Service (TRS)

Several volunteers support clients in our service, making weekly phone calls in addition to key workers’ support. Our TRS volunteers, who have lived experience, facilitate peer connections that aid recovery. They summarise conversations and report to key workers through a secure call log. All volunteers have training in safeguarding, boundaries, confidentiality, and communication skills.

Walking Group Facilitators

Our walking groups enhance the health and well-being of both current service members and the wider recovery community. Weekly walks led by our facilitators provide exciting, accessible options for physical exercise in the local area. Facilitators plan and lead walks, encourage conversation, ensure health and safety, and coordinate with key workers regarding any concerns. Occasionally, NYH collaborates with other walking groups, participates in recovery events, and raises funds to promote additional activities.

Art Group Facilitators

Several art groups are run across North Yorkshire Horizons, which are led by our incredibly creative and talented volunteers. Facilitators will plan and deliver sessions, sometimes bringing in experts from other areas for specific workshops, e.g. wreath making. Groups tend to be small and well-structured, allowing new skills to develop but within an intimate and safe space to discuss recovery.

Online Peer Support Facilitators

Our Aftercare team has a timetable of support groups, mostly led by volunteers with lived experience. This fosters connections, empathy, and mutual understanding. Several online groups, like our weekly women’s group and evening provisions, are facilitated by volunteers. They research topics for discussion and link to available resources and local events.

What training is available?

We offer a full induction package when you come to volunteer with us. This includes mandatory training on important areas such as safeguarding and professional boundaries. We also offer further training and development to suit individuals’ interests, such as relapse prevention and drug and alcohol awareness. There are opportunities for accredited courses to be completed with us to support your volunteer role, such as becoming a SMART facilitator.

What about expenses?

We cover all volunteer expenses, from travel and parking to lunch expenses and refreshments- you won’t be out of pocket when you give your time.

Count me in!

We’d be delighted to have you on board. To speak to us for more information about volunteering with North Yorkshire Horizons, please email our Volunteer & Peer Mentor Co-ordinator, Rebecca Tait – rebecca.tait@nyhorizons.org.uk
