Introducing Greg! As part of National Volunteers Week 2023
“Hello All, My name is Greg and I’ve been a volunteer with North Yorkshire Horizons, Scarborough Hub for more years than I can remember, setting up a walking group on Fridays for anyone (and their dogs) who is able to attend.
With a background, in my distant past, of working within NHS in-patient drug units and later at a drug rehab, once I settled in Scarborough and saw the problems some were experiencing with drink and drugs, I felt I could offer my services to try and make a positive contribution. As I like walking, am blessed to be living in such a nice part of the country and realise the benefits walking has for everyone, a walking group was my idea of how I could give some of my time to help out.
For many years, the group consisted of one or two or sometimes no one at all, but I have always felt it was important to persevere and we now have a good group of five or six that enjoy a few hours out in the fresh air together and get support from each other, talking and sharing in a relaxed and safe environment.
Horizons have been greatly supportive over the years, making me feel part of the organisation, always welcoming and appreciative of the few hours I give each week.
For anyone thinking of volunteering, I would say, go for it. You have the chance of meeting so many people and contributing to the local community in a positive way that can only be of benefit to all,
Greg”
The Scarborough walking group takes place every Friday morning at 11am, meeting outside the hub. Thanks to Greg, this is now a really well established and welcoming group, and has had a really positive impact on so many clients who have attended and continue to attend each week. Thank You Greg for your support, you are an asset to the volunteering team!
